… In the 20th century, socialist poets such as Roland Holst (1869-1952) and Schertema emerged, while Pieter C. Boutens (1870-1943) and Jan H. Leopold (1865-1925) stood out as poets who, influenced by the '80s movement, opened up unique new frontiers in poetry with philosophical tendencies. In opposition to naturalism, the Neo-Romantic movement emerged, and Arthur F. van Schendel (1874-1946) wrote excellent historical novels. During the interwar period, many poets and writers emerged from various schools of thought, including humanism, socialism, Catholicism, and Protestantism. Of particular note are the work of Hendrik Marsman (1899-1940), who was influenced by German Expressionism and advocated vitalism, and Simon Vestdijk (1898-1971), who showed vigorous creative talent in psychological and historical novels that transcended the boundaries of schools of thought.
