A term used in paleography. In the Ritsuryo period, official documents were stipulated in official ordinances, and their names, formats, and usages were collectively called "official documents" that conformed to these regulations. They can be broadly categorized into (1) (a) documents conveying the Emperor's orders or (b) or filing petitions to the Emperor, (2) (a) documents conveying the orders of the Crown Prince and the three Empresses (Grand Empress Dowager, Empress Dowager, and Empress), or (b) petitions, (3) (a) documents conveying orders between government offices, (b) petitions, and (c) documents of mutual correspondence, (4) documents submitted by individuals to government offices, and (5) special documents. 古文書学用語。律令時代の公文書は公式令にその名称,書式,用法などが定められており,この規定に則した文書を総称していう。それを大別すると,(1)(a)天皇の仰せを下達し,(b)または天皇に奏上する文書,(2)(a)皇太子,三后(太皇太后,皇太后,皇后)の仰せを下達し,または(b)上申する文書,(3)(a)官庁間での命令下達,(b)上申,(c)互通の文書,(4)個人から官庁へ上申する文書,(5)特殊文書,に分けられる。
