Stone Man and Stone Beast (English spelling) shi-ren shi-shou
Stone sculptures of people and animals have been placed in front of tombs and shrines in China since the Qin and Han dynasties. In front of the tomb of Han general Huo Qubing are stone animals such as elephants, sheep, cows, horses and turtles, of which a stone horse with a Hu man under its belly is particularly famous. There are many stone people and animals in the Northern and Southern Dynasties from the Later Han period onwards, but those in the Qianling tomb of Emperor Gaozong of the Tang dynasty are particularly famous. In front of the Qianling tomb are neatly lined up stone carvings of lions, civil servant figures, ostriches, horses and more, and the Pegasus horse among them is said to be the stone statue art representative of the early Tang dynasty. Several can be found in the Song and Ming dynasties, but the stone animals in the Ding Mausoleum of Emperor Wanli of the Ming dynasty, located near Beijing, are particularly well known.
