Knickerbockers - Nikkabokkaazu (English spelling) knickerbockers

Knickerbockers - Nikkabokkaazu (English spelling) knickerbockers

Also called knickers. A loose-fitting pair of shorts with a band and gathers below the knee. They appeared in the 1860s as men's sports or casual wear. They were made of fabrics such as check and tweed, and were combined with Norfolk jackets. Women also wore them when riding bicycles.

The American author Irving wrote "A History of New York" (1809) under the pseudonym Diedrich Knickerbocker. In the book, he depicted Dutch immigrants living in New York wearing shorts in an illustration, and so the Dutch immigrants were called knickerbockers and the shorts were called knickerbockers, hence the name.
