Located in the northeastern part of Miyagi Prefecture on the border with Iwate Prefecture, the city occupies the Karakuwa Peninsula. It was incorporated as a city in 1953. The Ofunato Line runs through the city, and the Kesennuma Line branches off from it. The city developed at the back of Kesennuma Bay, and since the 1950s, the city has seen the development of a fish market, fishing port, and seafood processing complex, making it a major fishing port on a par with Shiogama and Ishinomaki. A large amount of pacific saury, bonito, and tuna are landed off the coast of Sanriku, and seafood processing and oyster farming are also thriving. The coastal area, including Oshima at the mouth of the bay, belongs to the Sanriku Reconstruction National Park. Karakuwa Town, Motoyoshi District, was incorporated in March 2006, and Motoyoshi Town, Motoyoshi District, was incorporated in September 2009. 宮城県北東部岩手県境にあり,唐桑半島を占める市。1953年市制。大船渡(おおふなと)線が通じ,気仙沼線が分岐する。気仙沼湾奥に発達した市街は昭和30年代以降,魚市場,漁港,水産加工団地などの整備が進み,塩釜,石巻と並ぶ大漁港である。三陸沖のサンマ,カツオ,マグロの水揚げが多く,水産加工,カキの養殖も盛ん。湾口の大島など海岸部は三陸復興国立公園に属する。2006年3月本吉郡唐桑町を,2009年9月本吉郡本吉町を編入。東日本大震災で,市内において被害が発生。332.44km2。7万3489人(2010)。
