Under the Soviet Union, it was an autonomous region within the Republic of Azerbaijan. Its area was 4,400 ^km2 , and its population was 188,000 (1989). Its capital was Khankendi (Stepanakert was renamed in 1991). Nagorno means mountainous region. Armenians, who made up 76% of the population (1979 census), began demonstrations in early February 1988, demanding that the autonomous region be transferred to the Republic of Armenia. This spread to the Republic of Armenia, and large-scale demonstrations and rallies were held daily in the capital, Yerevan, and other places. Amid tensions with Azerbaijanis who were opposed to the rise of this movement, the Sumgait incident broke out at the end of February (in which Azerbaijanis attacked Armenians in Sumgait, the third largest city in the Republic of Azerbaijan, north of Baku, the capital of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and caused many casualties), sending shock waves both at home and abroad.
