Dogs used for hunting. It is estimated that humans began using dogs as servants at least 9,500 years ago, and because dogs have served as assistants in hunting since ancient times, there are many dog ​​breeds and lineages.

There are various types of hunting dogs, including indicator dogs, hunting dogs, retrieving dogs, slow-track dogs, fast-track dogs, and fighting dogs. The main breeds of indicator dogs are pointers, English setters, Irish setters, Gordon setters, Brittany spaniels, Weimaraners, Magyarvishals, and German shorthairs. They are trained to quickly locate game birds hiding in the grass, such as pheasants, pheasants, quails, and other birds, and to teach their masters. Hunting dogs are mainly from the spaniel family, and they chase game birds around by prancing around them, giving their masters a chance to shoot. Representative breeds include the cocker spaniel and the springer spaniel, as well as the small Japanese dog (Shiba Inu). Retrieving dogs are dogs used to retrieve game that has been dropped in thick brush or aquatic plants, or that has been injured and escapes, and include Labrador retrievers, Chesapeake Bay retrievers, golden retrievers, and water spaniels. Slow-chasing dogs are breeds that slowly follow the footsteps of small animals such as hares, raccoons, and badgers towards their master, or bite them themselves; the Beagle is a typical example. Fast-chasing dogs are breeds that swiftly chase deer, wild boars, foxes, and other animals, and bite them to give their masters a chance to shoot; famous examples include the Walker Hound and the Plott Hound. Fighting dogs are tough breeds that fight and take down large wild animals such as wild boars and bears, or continue barking to keep their prey from escaping until their master arrives; typical examples include the Kishu dog and Airedale terrier.

Training a hunting dog includes getting it used to the sound of gunfire, how to search for prey, how to attack the prey once it has been found so that the owner can shoot it, and how to dispose of the shot prey (retrieving or guarding it; injured or escaping prey is pursued and captured).It can be expected that it will take approximately three years to master the training.

狩猟に使役するイヌ。人類がイヌを使役し始めたのは、少なくとも9500年以上の昔と推定されているが、イヌはそうした古代から人類の狩猟の助手を務めてきたため、多くの犬種（品種）や系統に分かれている。

　猟犬には指示犬、狩出犬、回収犬、緩追犬、速追犬、格闘犬などがある。指示犬の主要犬種は、ポインター、イングリッシュセッター、アイリッシュセッター、ゴードンセッター、ブリタニースパニエル、ワイマラナー、マジャールビスラ、ジャーマンショートヘアードなどで、キジ、ヤマドリ、コジュケイ、ウズラなど、草むらに隠れている狩猟鳥をすばやく突き止めて、主人に教えるように仕込まれる。狩出犬はおもにスパニエル族がこれに属し、狩猟鳥の潜んでいる周囲を跳ね回って追い立て、主人に発砲の機会を与える。コッカースパニエル、スプリンガースパニエルなどがその代表で、小形日本犬（柴犬(しばいぬ)）などもこれに含まれる。回収犬は、深い茂みや水生植物の中に落とされた獲物や、負傷して逃亡する獲物などを回収するためのイヌで、ラブラドルレトリバー、チェサピークベイ、ゴールデンレトリバー、ウォータースパニエルなど。緩追犬はノウサギ、タヌキ、アナグマなど小形獣類の足臭をゆっくりたどって主人のほうへ追ったり、自らかみ伏せたりする犬種で、ビーグルが代表。速追犬はシカ、イノシシ、キツネなどを俊敏に追いかけてかみ伏せ、主人に発砲の機会を与える犬種で、ウォーカーハウンド、プロットハウンドなどが著名。格闘犬は、イノシシ、クマなど大形野獣と格闘して倒したり、主人が現場にくるまで獲物が逃げぬようほえ続ける気丈な犬種で、代表的なものは紀州犬やエアデールテリアなど。

　猟犬の訓練は、銃声に慣らすこと、獲物の捜索法、獲物を発見してからこれを主人に撃たせるための攻め方、撃った獲物の処理方法（回収または看守。負傷逃亡するものは追跡して捕捉(ほそく)）などが課目で、完成にはほぼ3年かかるとみてよい。
