A city in southwestern Guatemala. It is the second largest city in the country and the capital of Quetzaltenango Department. It is located about 110 km west-northwest of the capital, Guatemala, at the northern foot of the Santa Maria Volcano (3,772 m), and has an altitude of about 2,330 m. Before it was conquered by the Spanish, it prospered as the capital of the kingdom of the Quiche Maya (→ Maya), a Latin American Indian (Indian), and even today many of its residents are Latin American Indians. It developed as a commercial and industrial center in western Guatemala, and in addition to distributing agricultural products, it has factories for textiles, flour mills, beer, etc. The city was rebuilt after being destroyed by the eruption of Santa Maria Volcano in 1902. Nearby is the ancient battlefield where the Quiche Maya fought and lost against the Spanish army that invaded from Mexico in 1524. Quetzaltenango means "Palace of Quetzal." The quetzal is a type of trogon revered by the Maya and is the national bird of Guatemala. It is also the name of the country's currency (quetzal).
