Lepidoptera, Bombycidae family. With a wingspan of 30-45mm, its wings are small compared to its body and it cannot fly. The tips of its forewings protrude like hooks. Both the body and wings are white or pale yellow, its antennae are brown, and its compound eyes are usually black. The larvae are called silkworms. They are thought to have been improved from a wild species called Kuwago, and many varieties are bred to produce silk from their cocoons. They were imported to Japan from China a long time ago. They are also bred in India and Europe. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
