Gheorghe Gheorghiu‐Dej

1901‐65
Romanian politician. He was a worker and joined the Romanian Communist Party in 1930. He was recognized as the leader of the great railway and oil workers' strike of 1933, for which he was sentenced to 12 years in prison. He was elected to the party's Central Committee in 1934 and led party activities from prison in Doftana. He escaped from prison on August 10, 1944, and organized the anti-fascist armed uprising on August 23. He became the party's secretary-general from 1945 onwards, and served as minister and prime minister, becoming the highest leader in the period of Romania's socialist construction.

ルーマニアの政治家。労働者出身で1930年ルーマニア共産党に入党，33年の鉄道･石油労働者の大ストライキの指導者として認められたが，そのため12年の懲役刑を宣告された。34年党中央委員に選ばれ，ドフタナDoftanaの獄中から党活動を指導，44年8月10日に脱獄し，8月23日の反ファシスト武装蜂起を準備した。45年以後党書記長となり，また各大臣，首相を歴任して，ルーマニアの社会主義建設期の最高指導者となった。
