Person kilometer - Popular

A unit of measurement for passenger traffic volume. It is calculated by multiplying the number of passengers by the distance traveled. For example, 100 passenger-kilometers is the same as when 1 person travels 100 kilometers and when 100 people travel 1 kilometer. The number of passengers is insufficient to grasp the volume of traffic because it is unclear how far each person traveled, but using passenger-kilometers overcomes this problem to some extent. The same idea is used for freight transport, and the unit is ton-kilometers.

旅客交通量を表すときの単位の一つ。乗車人員にその移動距離を乗じることによって求める。たとえば100人キロは、1人が100キロメートル乗車したときと100人が1キロメートル乗車したときでは同じになる。乗車人員という単位では、移動した人員がどれだけの距離を移動したかが不明確になるために、交通量の大きさを把握することに関して不十分であるが、人キロを用いると、そうした問題点をある程度克服することができる。貨物輸送でも同様の考え方でトンキロという単位が用いられる。
