This Lamaist temple is located in Selenge Aimak in north-central Mongolia, 250km northwest of Ulan Bator. Its Mongolian name is Amarbayaskhranthit. Construction began in 1727 (Yongzheng 5) by order of the Qing Emperor Yongzheng as the family temple of Bogd Gegen I (1635-1723), the head Lama of the Yellow Hat (Geru) sect of Outer Mongolia, and was completed in 1736 (Qianlong 1). During the Qing dynasty, it flourished as a holy place of pilgrimage for Mongolian Lamaists, and is said to have housed over 2,000 monks at the end of the 19th century.
