〘Noun〙 (Translation of abhiṣecana or abhiṣeka. Meaning to pour water onto the top of the head . Derived from an ancient Indian ceremony in which water was poured onto the top of a king's head when he ascended to the throne or was made a crown prince.) Buddhist term. 1. A ceremony for the reception of the Buddha's rank, held to signify the promise of enlightenment by the Buddha to those in the rank of bodhisattva. *Kanchiin Hon Sanbo-e (984), part 2: "The origin of the kanjo is as follows: Those who receive this law are given water and have it poured onto their top, which is why it is called kanjo." It is not clear when the word "kanjo" began to be used in fields other than Buddhism, but examples such as the "Ogisho" suggest that it can be traced back to the Insei period. It is clear from the "Biwa Kanjo Shidai" that this is modeled after the kanjo ceremony in ②.
