The theory of popularizing art

Japanese: 芸術大衆化論 - げいじゅつたいしゅうかろん

Generally speaking, it refers to a theory that advocates creating a positive relationship between art and the masses, as opposed to the social isolation or solitude of art. In particular, it was considered one of the basic aims of the proletarian art movement in Japan from 1920 to 1935. In 1928, a "Debate on Popularizing Art" was held over this issue for about six months in Senki, one of the movement's main magazines. In the June issue, Nakano Shigeharu wrote "On the Errors of the So-Called Popularization Theory of Art," in which he fiercely criticized the tendency to popularize proletarian art through vulgarization, pandering, and watering down, and called for artists to approach the truth of the masses with a stubborn approach.

一般的には，芸術の社会的孤立または孤高に対して，芸術と大衆との積極的な関係をつくりだそうと主張する論をいう。特に，1920‐35年の日本のプロレタリア芸術運動においては基本の目的の一つとされた。28年にはこれをめぐって〈芸術大衆化論争〉が，その運動の主要な雑誌の一つたる《戦旗》誌上で，約半年にわたって行われた。中野重治はその6月号に〈いはゆる芸術の大衆化論の誤りについて〉を書き，通俗化･迎合･水うめ等によってプロレタリア芸術の大衆化をはかる傾向をはげしく論難し，芸術家としての頑固な進み方で大衆の真実に迫ることを要求した。
