Gyozen - Gyozen

Japanese: 凝然 - ぎょうねん
Gyozen - Gyozen

A scholar monk at Todaiji Kaidan-in in the late Kamakura period. His surname was Fujiwara. His bogo name was Jikan. He was from Takahashi-go, Ochi-gun, Iyo Province (Ehime Prefecture). At the age of 16, he received the Bodhisattva precepts at Mount Hiei, and at the age of 18, he went to Todaiji Kaidan-in to receive the precepts. He later studied the precepts under Ensho and Shogen (1220-1292), Pure Land Buddhism under Chosai (1184-1266), Yogacara and Kegon Buddhism under Sosho (1202-1278), and Shingon Buddhism under Shoshu (1219-1291), and showed an interest in Zen, while also being well versed in national history, Confucianism, and the apocrypha of the various schools of thought. Following Ensho, he became an elder at the Kaidan-in, and while devoting himself to writing with the belief that learning is the first step, he also provided guidance to future generations and worked to promote the precepts and Kegon Buddhism. His writings spanned various sects, totaling over 1200 volumes in 127 volumes, including the "Hasshu Koyo" (Outline of the Eight Sects), but he also wrote many large works, such as the "Kegon Tangenki Toyusho" (The Kegon Tangenki Toyusho) and the "Bonmokyo Sho Nisshusho" (The Bonmoukyo Sho). He also wrote commentaries on the Sankyo Gisho (The Commentary on the Three Sutras), historical works such as the "Sangoku Bukkyo Dentsu Engi" (The Origin of the Transmission of Buddhist Law in the Three Countries), and Shomyo (Calligraphy). He passed away at Kaidan-in on September 5, 1281, at the age of 82.
