Bagatelle (English: bagatelle) French

A name used as the title of a piece of music in modern European music. Originally meaning something like "something trivial," as a piece of music it did not have any particular meaning or form, but it was given to very small pieces, most often piano pieces. It came into use in the 18th and 19th centuries, and Beethoven in particular liked to give it to short, sketch-like piano pieces. It is also often used in the plural as the title of a collection of several pieces. The word continued to appear occasionally as the title of musical works up until the 20th century, though not frequently, in roughly this way.

ヨーロッパ近代の音楽において、楽曲のタイトルとして使われた名称。本来は「つまらないもの」といった意味で、楽曲名としては、とくに決まった意味をもっていたとか、一定の形式と結び付いていたわけではないが、ごく小規模な小品につけられた題名で、ピアノ曲であることが圧倒的に多い。18世紀から19世紀にかけて使用されるようになり、とくにベートーベンは短いスケッチのようなピアノ曲に好んでこの名をつけた。またしばしば複数形で、数曲からなる曲集のタイトルとして用いられることもある。このことばはその後も、頻繁ではないが、ほぼこういった使われ方で、20世紀までときどき音楽作品のタイトルとして現れている。
