Japanese: 間引き - まびき

It is the act of leaving good seedlings and uprooting others to ensure that the seedlings grow well, leaving enough space between them, but by extension, it refers to the killing of babies at human birth who are thought to be unable to be raised due to poverty or other reasons. In Japan, it is said to have been practiced since the Nara period, and in the Edo period, it is thought to have been practiced in various places due to the hardships of the peasant class, and there are words that mean thinning, such as "return," "put back," and "send to gather firewood." 苗の良好な生育のために，良い苗を残して他を引き抜き，十分な間隔をあける作業のことだが，転じて，人間の出生にあたり，貧困などを背景に，育てられないと考えた赤子を死亡させること。日本では奈良時代から行われたこととされ，江戸時代には農民層の生活苦を背景として各地で行われたと考えられ，〈返す〉〈戻す〉〈薪拾いにやる〉など，間引きを意味する言葉がのこる。各藩では極貧者の生児に養育料（米沢藩では金１両ずつ）を給する等，防止に努めた。→堕胎
