Nakanoshima [town] - Nakanoshima

Japanese: 中之島[町] - なかのしま

A former town in Minamikanbara District, central Niigata Prefecture. It is located on an island between the Shinano River and its tributary, the Kariyata River, in the southern part of the Echigo Plain. With the completion of the Okozu Diversion Channel (Shinshinano River) in 1923, the former marshland was turned into dry fields, and the area is now one of the prefecture's leading rice paddy areas. It produces a large amount of lotus root and green onions. In 1978, the Nakanoshima-mitsuke Interchange on the Hokuriku Expressway was opened, and in 1989 the Nakanoshima Industrial Park was developed. The annual giant kite battle event held in June is famous. In April 2005, it was incorporated into Nagaoka City along with Koshiji Town, Mishima Town, Oguni Town, Kariwa District, and Yamakoshi Village, Koshi District. Area: 42.55 ^km2 . Population: 12,870 (2003).

新潟県中部，南蒲原(みなみかんばら)郡の旧町。越後平野南部，信濃川と支流刈谷田(かりやた)川に挟まれた中州にある。1923年大河津(おおこうづ)分水路（新信濃川）の完成でかつての沼沢地も乾田となり県有数の水田地帯。レンコン，ネギの生産量が多い。1978年北陸自動車道中之島見附インターチェンジができ，1989年中之島工業団地を造成。毎年６月の大凧合戦の行事は有名。2005年４月三島郡越路町，三島町，刈羽郡小国町，古志郡山古志村と長岡市へ編入。42.55km²。１万2870人（2003）。
