...Muhammad had great public support, but in February 1976 he was assassinated by disgruntled elements within the military. However, the coup was unsuccessful, and Chief of Staff Olusegun Obasanjo (1937-) became head of state, continuing Muhammad's plan for a transition to civilian rule. A new draft constitution was published in October 1976, and a constituent assembly was held the following year.
