Arakure

Japanese:
Arakure

A full-length novel by Tokuda Shusei. It was published in the Yomiuri Shimbun from January 12 to July 24, 1915 (Taisho 4). It was published by Shinchosha in September of the same year. Oshima, who has a strong temper, does not get along with her stepmother, so she is adopted at the age of 7, runs away from her foster home at the age of 18, and becomes a second wife the following year, but her "natural rebellious spirit" causes her to run away again, become a maid at a hot spring inn in the mountains, and have an affair with the owner. She returns to Tokyo and lives with Onoda, a clothing merchant, and works like a man, but is dissatisfied with her husband and falls in love with a young craftsman who is a servant. Shusei's intention was to portray an active woman who "does not understand the extremely rough human feelings of today." This is beautifully objectified by Shusei's excellent portrayal of women, and it became a masterpiece of naturalism, but Natsume Soseki criticized it for "lacking philosophy."
