The transfer of genetic information to another cell via a bacteriophage. Also called transduction. In bacteria such as Salmonella, the bacteriophage present in the bacterial cell enters another cell while carrying fragments of the bacteria's own genetic material (chromosomes), and various physiological genetic traits, such as nutritional requirements and drug resistance, are transferred from one cell to another. It was discovered in 1948 by Joshua Lederberg and others in Salmonella typhimurium.
