1812‐78 Azerbaijani literary figure. Born in Sheki (now a provincial city in Azerbaijan). In Russia, he is called Mirza Fatali Akhundov. To escape the ravages of the Iranian-Russian War, he moved around Azerbaijan and trained as a mullah. He later studied Western European subjects and became an interpreter for the Caucasian Government-General, a position he held for the rest of his life. During this time, he published many literary works in his native Azerbaijani. Among them, Tamsirat (a collection of plays) was translated into Persian and had a great influence on Iran's "constitutional literature movement."
