In Japan, it is mainly cultivated in Hokkaido and the Hokuriku region as a fiber plant. The stem is cylindrical and elongated, branching at the top, and the leaves are lanceolate or linear, 2-3cm long, and alternate. In summer, white or blue five-petaled flowers about 1.5cm in diameter grow at the ends of the branches. Linseed oil is extracted from the mature seeds and is used mainly in the manufacture of paints, oil paints, printing inks, etc. High-quality fibers are also extracted from the stems to make a high-quality fiber called linen, which is used to make handkerchiefs, clothing fabrics, shirts, tablecloths, etc.
