The plain of the Po River basin, which spans four northern and central Italian regions (Piedmont, Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna, and Veneto). It covers an area of 74,970 km2. It is a long plain stretching from east to west, sandwiched between the foothills of the Alps and the Apennine Mountains. Its fertile soil, water, and easy transportation have given birth to rich agricultural areas since ancient times and fostered many cities. It is still the most economically active region in Italy. The northern side of the plain is bounded by a line connecting the cities of Bergamo, Brescia, Verona, and Vicenza, while the southern side is bounded by a line connecting the cities of Alessandria, Piacenza, Parma, Modena, Bologna, and Rimini. Along the Po River that flows between them are the cities of Pavia, Cremona, Mantua, and Ferrara. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
