An ancient kingdom in western Asia Minor. Its capital was Sardis. It was founded by the Indo-European Lydians and flourished after the fall of the Phrygian Empire in the early 7th century BCE. Its fertile soil and strategic location on the trade route between Asia and Europe made it rich in gold, as seen in the legend of Midas, and it produced the oldest coins. Around 546 BCE, it was conquered by Cyrus II of Persia under the rule of the famous and wealthy Croesus. → Related articles Adana | Ephesus | Cyrus II | Median Kingdom Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
