[The Significance of Researching the History of Economic Theories]
When considering the need to study the history of economics, we must first consider how empirical science, of which economics is one field, develops. A textbook explanation would go like this: To explain phenomena that occur frequently or frequently, we create theoretical models that simplify reality by taking into account only the factors we consider to be the most important, that is, by making assumptions about what is important. Taking microeconomics as an example, a system of equations that hold between consumer utility, income, the prices of various goods, and the consumer demand for various goods is a theoretical model for explaining consumer behavior.

　経済学の歴史を研究する必要性を考える場合，まず経済学もその一分野である実証科学はどのように発展していくものかを考える必要がある。教科書的な説明をすれば次のようになろう。たびたびおこる，あるいはいくつもおこる事象を説明するために，われわれは最も重要であると考える要因だけを考慮に入れて，つまり何が重要であるかについての仮定を立てたうえで，現実を簡単化した理論モデルをつくる。ミクロ経済学の例をとると，消費者の効用，所得，いろいろな財の価格，消費者のいろいろな財の需要量などの間に成立するいくつかの方程式の体系は，消費者の行動を説明するための理論モデルである。
