The emergence of samurai dates back to the middle of the Heian period, but their contribution to culture is thought to have begun around the time of the Genpei War. Rude, powerful sculptures of Buddhist statues, inspired by local feudal lords, began to be seen, and even in the central government, works that aimed to break away from the gentle and elegant style of Jocho began to appear.
