A village in Oniyuu County, in the southwestern tip of Fukui Prefecture. Population 3,103 (1995). It occupies the upper reaches of the Minami River and borders Kyoto Prefecture and Shiga Prefecture. It has been an open area since ancient times, and the village name comes from Natanosho, which was established in the Heian period. As most of the village area is made up of forests, forestry is thriving, and a lumber market is held once a month. There is a primeval rhododendron forest and Nojikanotaki waterfall. 福井県南西端,遠敷(おにゆう)郡の村。人口3103(1995)。南川の上流域を占め,京都府と滋賀県に隣接する。古くから開けた地で,村名は平安時代に設けられた名田荘(なたのしよう)にちなむ。山林が村域の大部分を占めるため林業が盛んで,月に1回木材市場が開かれる。シャクナゲの原生林,野鹿の滝などがある。国道162号線が通じる。【上田 雅子】
