Western-style painter. Born on July 9, 1891 in Yamashina, Kyoto. He began writing poetry, novels, and tanka while attending Taikyu Junior High School in Wakayama Prefecture, and after dropping out, he self-published a collection of tanka poems, "Mokuishu," in Kyoto. In 1921 (Taisho 10), he moved to Tokyo and wrote popular novels while painting. In 1928, he experienced the Great Kanto Earthquake, and published a tanka magazine, "Higashi," and in the same year, his work, "Tabata Substation," was selected for the first Shinko Western Painting Exhibition. He devoted himself to painting in Kyoto, and in 1926, he returned to Tokyo to exhibit at the Teiten and Nikaten exhibitions. The following year, he received the Chogyu Award at the Nikaten exhibition for "Beer Room" and other works, and thereafter exhibited every year. In 1930 (Showa 3), he exhibited "Underground Railroad" and other works at the Association Exhibition, and received the Association Award. From around 1957, he wandered around Asakusa, Mikawashima, and the Arakawa Floodway. In the early 1930s, he held a number of solo exhibitions at the Amagi Gallery in Shinjuku. In the summer of 1962, he visited Oshima with Yano Fumio, left the Nikaten Exhibition, and exhibited Noah, Noah, and other works at the first Issuikai Exhibition. He moved from a Fauve-like style to expressing a poetic vision, but died of stomach cancer on October 12, 1940, as a poor man at the Itabashi Main Branch of the Tokyo Municipal Orphanage.
