...A popular revolt that broke out in the Spanish Viceroyalty of New Granada (now Colombia) in the late 18th century, centered around white merchants born in the colony. To raise funds for the war against Britain based on the Spanish-American Alliance of 1779, Spain ordered the colony to increase taxes. In response to the introduction of new taxes by the Spanish Commissioner Francisco Gutierrez and the increase in the royalties on salt and tobacco, in April 1781, Juan Francisco Berbeo formed a revolutionary committee (común) in Socorro (now Santander province) with 6,000 members, centered around four merchants.
