...Each species has a different species of fig wasp that transmits pollen. Some have male and female plants like figs (dioecious, for example, the Japanese fig and the Japanese fig wasp), while others are monoecious, with all plants bearing the same type of sac. In the monoecious Japanese fig, in addition to the male flowers, there are two types of female flowers, long and short styles, inside the sac. When the wasps pollinate and lay eggs, seeds form in the long style flowers and galls form in the short style flowers, resulting in roughly equal numbers of seeds and galls.
