Decorator - Decorator
A craftsman whose main job was decoration, also known as kazashoku. "Kazashoku" is written as "kana" and refers to the metalworking techniques of tsuikin and tsuiki. A metal plate is placed on an anvil and struck with a hammer to create a shape. They inherited the techniques of silverwork from the Middle Ages and became independent in the early modern period. They also adopted techniques for metal surface treatment such as engraving, filigree work, soldering, and plating. They were a private occupation, and the centers of their craft were Kyoto, Osaka, and Edo.

飾りをおもな仕事とする職人で,飾職ともいった。飾りは錺とも書き,金属加工技術のうちの鎚金(ついきん),鎚起(ついき)のことをいう。金属板を金床に置き金づちでたたいて造形する。中世の銀細工(しろがねざいく)の技法を受けつぎ,近世になって独立した。さらに彫金,細金(ほそがね)細工,鑞付(ろうつけ),滅金(めつき)(鍍金)などの金属表面処理の技法もとりいれてきた。仕事は居職で,京都・大坂・江戸が技術の中心であった。
