Akiyoshi Mountain Building

Japanese: 秋吉造山運動 - あきよしぞうざんうんどう

Mountain building in Japan in the mid-Triassic period. This was the peak of a series of mountain building movements from the end of the Paleozoic to the Triassic period (the Akiyoshi Mountain Building Cycle), when the Chichibu Paleozoic strata deposited in the latter half of the Paleozoic period were folded, and some of them became metamorphic rocks such as those in Hida and Sangun, creating a landmass called Paleonipponia, mainly on the Sea of Japan side of Honshu. Proposed by Teiichi Kobayashi in 1941, this series of mountain building movements is now rejected.

三畳紀中ごろ日本でおこった造山運動。古生代末〜三畳紀の一連の造山運動（秋吉造山輪廻）の最盛期で，古生代後半に堆積した秩父古生層が褶曲(しゅうきょく)し，一部は飛騨(ひだ)・三郡(さんぐん)などの変成岩になり，本州日本海側を中心にパレオニッポニアという陸地を生じたという。1941年小林貞一が提唱，今日ではこの一連の造山運動は否定されている。
