1612‐70 A leading French architect during the reign of Louis XIV. He rose from a speculative construction business in Paris, and gained attention for incorporating innovative ideas into urban housing and castle architecture. His Château de Baux-le-Vicomte (1657), which he built in collaboration with painter Le Brun and garden designer Le Nôtre, is considered the highlight of French castle architecture. In 1654 he succeeded Lemercier as chief architect to the royal household, and together with Le Brun and Le Nôtre, he oversaw the expansion of the Louvre (from 1661) and the overall plan for the Palace of Versailles (from 1669).
