...The national writer Rainis and the folk music composer Janis Mediņš (1890-1966) are representative examples. In 1819, the first university in Latvia, the University of Riga, was founded, and Janis Endzelīns (1873-1961) completed six volumes of the Latvian Dictionary and worked to establish a standard language, while also compiling 12 volumes of Latvian Songs, making a great contribution to raising national consciousness. After World War II, Riga, as an important city in the three Baltic states, saw a large number of Russians immigrate, and since 1970, Russians have surpassed Latvians in number. ...
