County magistrate - Gundai

〘Noun〙① One of the job titles in the Muromachi and Sengoku periods. In charge of the administration of counties within the feudal lord's domain. Also called county magistrate or daidaikan. ※Karusho Hikitsuke - August 11, 1451 (Houtoku 3) "Tickets for allocating Hosho Tayu Kanjin Sarugaku _{have been received} . County magistrate Tokuji Magozaemon's side"② One of the job titles in the Edo Shogunate. Under the control of the Finance Magistrate, they were in charge of collecting taxes in territories directly controlled by the Shogunate, judicial trials for the people, and other general civil affairs. They were higher in rank and area of control than the daikan, with a land area of roughly 100,000 koku or more. It began in 1590 ( Tensho 18 ), when the Kanto Gundai was established, and other Gundai were established in Mino, Saigoku, Hida, etc. ※Kinryo Kou - Zenshu, Vol. 4, Vol. 33, July 1801 (Kyowa 1) "Items that can be sent out as a district magistrate's handbook are also sent out as a public servant." ③ Title of the Satsuma Domain. 〘名〙① 室町・戦国時代の職名の一つ。大名の領国内の郡の行政をつかさどった。郡奉行、大代官ともいう。※鵤荘引付‐宝徳三年（1451）八月一一日「宝生太夫勧進猿楽之配符入_レ之。郡代徳次孫左衛門方」② 江戸幕府の職名の一つ。勘定奉行の支配に属し、幕府直轄地の租税の徴収、領民の裁判、その他民政全般をつかさどったもの。格式、支配地域とも代官より上で、大体一〇万石以上。天正一八年（一五九〇）、関東郡代が設けられたのに始まり、ほかに美濃、西国、飛騨郡代などがあった。※禁令考‐前集・第四・巻三三・享和元年（1801）七月「郡代手限にて差図可致品も、公事方同役共之為差出」③ 薩摩藩の職名。農村支配の最高責任者。郡奉行を指揮し、勧農その他農民の取締りに任じた。※薩隅日田賦雑徴‐明暦三年（1657）七月一七日「領国之内郡代役儀島津筑前新納右衛門へ申渡、郡奉行被_二相付_一之条致_二相談_一」④ 江戸時代、諸藩に設けられた農村支配役人。※法例集（岡山藩）‐一・第三年貢・寛政三年（1791）一一月「此等之儀は郡代、郡奉行、郡目附共も早々可申出筈之処」
