Born: February 26, 1896, Mariupol [Died] August 31, 1948. Moscow Soviet politician. In 1915 he joined the Russian Social Democratic Labor Party (the predecessor of the Communist Party) and participated in the revolution in the Urals. In 1934 he became Secretary of the Communist Party Central Committee, and in 1939 he became a member of the party's Politburo. He led the party organization in Leningrad and participated in the purges. During World War II he participated in the defense of Leningrad and rose to the rank of army general. In 1947 he gave a report on the international situation at the founding conference of the Cominform. He promoted party ideology in many fields, including philosophy, history, and music, and was at one time called I. Stalin's successor. ZhdanovPlease see the Mariupolis page.
