A port city located in the narrowest part of the Oresund Strait in the northern part of Zealand, Denmark. Population: 57,000 (1996). Famous for the ancient castle Kronborg, which was the model for the setting of Shakespeare's Hamlet. Denmark equipped the castle with artillery and levied a straits tax on ships sailing through the city from 1429 to 1857, which became a source of revenue for the city's prosperity. Currently, it is connected to Helsingborg in Sweden by ferry in 15 minutes, and is a key point on the Route 4 of the European Highway. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
