Ceratocystis

Japanese: クワイカビ（英語表記）Ceratocystis

A mold belonging to the Ascomycete family. The characteristic feature of the Ascomycetes is that the ascus is antler-shaped with a long, dark-colored neck. It was named after the arrowhead due to its resemblance to the shape of the arrowhead. Inside the ascus, asci usually contain eight ascus spores lined up vertically, and when they mature, the spores inside are pushed out and form a mass at the tip of the ascus neck. In addition to the ascus, conidia, which are the asexual stage, are also produced. Some have conidiospores that form black bundles with conidia forming a mass at the tip, while others have separate stalks with conidia connected in a bead-like shape at the end.

子囊菌類タマカビ科のカビ。タマカビ類の特性である子囊殻はとくり状で頸部（けいぶ）は長く，暗色。その形がクワイに似ているため，この名がつけられた。子囊殻の内部には，多くは8個の子囊胞子をもった子囊が縦にならんでいて，成熟すると内部の胞子が押し出されて，子囊殻頸部の先端にかたまる。子囊殻のほか，無性時代である分生子もつくられ，分生子柄が黒い束となって先端に分生子が塊となるもの，柄がばらばらで先に分生子が数珠状につながるものなどがある。
