Skanda (English spelling)

Japanese: スカンダ(英語表記)Skanda
Skanda (English spelling)
The name of a Hindu deity. He is said to be the son of the supreme god Shiva and the goddess Parvati, and is also known as Kumāra or Kārttikeya. His name can be found in Vedic literature from ancient times, but he became important in the epic period, and a sacred book called Skanda Purana was created, which describes Skanda. He is considered a war god with various forms, such as one, six heads, two, and twelve arms, and all of them hold weapons and are accompanied by a peacock. In southern India, he is called Subrahmanya. He is also used in Buddhist mythology, and is one of the eight generals of the Four Heavenly Kings of the South, Zochoten, and a guardian deity. He is also transliterated as Shikendaten and Idaten, and is known by the latter name in China and Japan. The original meaning of his name is "one who jumps," and in Japan, expressions such as Idaten running are used because he runs quickly to defeat demons.
