369‐404 A Chinese politician from the end of the Eastern Jin dynasty. A native of Longkang (Anhui province) in the state of Suo. An educated man also famous as a calligrapher. An illegitimate son of Huan Wen, he lay low in his base in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, but in 399 (Long'an 3), he took advantage of the political turmoil to seize full military and political power in the area, and in 402 (Yuanxing 1), he led an army to seize control of the capital, Jiankang (Nanjing). In 403, he forced Emperor An to abdicate, changed the country's name to Chu, and destroyed the Eastern Jin dynasty. The following year, he was defeated by the army of Liu Yu and others, and the Huan clan was destroyed and Emperor An was restored to the throne, but it was only in name; real power was held by Liu Yu.
