This library was owned by Yashiro Hirokata, a Japanese classical scholar from the mid-Edo period. It was so named because it was located on the banks of Shinobazu Pond in Ueno, Edo. Hirokata was said to be one of the greatest book collectors of the Edo period, and had a collection of about 50,000 books stored in three storehouses. After his death, most of his books were given to Hachisuka Narimasa, the lord of the Awa domain, and were added to the Awa Bunko. After the Meiji Restoration, the library was entrusted to the Tokushima Prefectural Library, but most of it was destroyed in air raids during World War II and a fire at the library in 1950.
