Popular song from Indonesia and Malaysia. It originated in the 17th century based on music brought by the Portuguese in the 16th century, and became popular in the 19th century. It is an important genre in today's pop music. The oldest versions are still sung in the local language with a Portuguese accent, but most are in Indonesian. In Java and Sunda, local versions have been derived. The typical instrument lineup is flute, violin, mandolin, one or two guitars, two kerongchong (small guitars), cello (mimicking drum patterns with pizzicato), and plucked double bass. These accompany one or two singers.

インドネシア，マレーシアの大衆歌謡。16世紀にポルトガル人が持ち込んだ音楽を土台として17世紀に発生，19世紀以降流行。今日のポップ音楽においても重要なジャンル。最も古いものは，今もポルトガル訛りの現地語で歌われるが，大半はインドネシア語。ジャワやスンダでは地域特有のものが派生。典型的な楽器編成は，横笛，バイオリン，マンドリン，ギター１または２，クロンチョン（小型のギター）２，チェロ（太鼓のパターンをピッツィカートで模倣），撥弦のコントラバス。これらが１人または２人の歌手の伴奏をする。
