A city in the southernmost part of Sweden, it is the capital of Kronoberg County. It has a population of 68,499 (1988). It is a commercial center, producing paper, machinery, matches, furniture, etc. In the Middle Ages, it was the trading center of Småland, and was granted a city law in 1342. The 11th century church is said to have been built by St. Siegfried, and the city is currently headed by a Lutheran bishop.
