A city facing Osaka Bay in the southeast of Awaji Island, Hyogo Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1940. The central city area developed as a castle town and fishing port for the Inada clan, a chief retainer of the Hachisuka clan, from the early Edo period onwards. It is served by regular ships from Osaka, Kobe and Fuke, and the Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Road, and is the center of the entire island. Industries such as cotton spinning, machinery and electrical appliances, as well as seafood processing, are carried out, and mandarin oranges and onions are specialty crops in the surrounding area. Yura, on the eastern edge, is an old fishing port and castle town. Yellowtail and seaweed farming is thriving. It is the second largest beef cattle producer in the prefecture. The port terminal building was completed in 1994, and the development of the waterfront is progressing. Mikuma Park, the remains of Sumoto Castle, Sakiyama with Senkoji Temple on the summit, the coast of the Yura area, and Goshikihama, a scenic spot on the west coast, all belong to the Setonaikai National Park. 兵庫県淡路島南東部,大阪湾に面する市。1940年市制。中心市街は江戸初期以降蜂須賀藩の家老稲田氏の城下町,漁港として発達,大阪,神戸,深日(ふけ)からの定期船,本州四国連絡道路が通じ,全島の中心をなす。綿紡績,機械,電器などの工業や水産加工が行われ,周辺ではミカン,タマネギを特産。東端の由良は古い漁港,城下町。ハマチ,ノリなどの養殖が盛ん。肉牛の生産は県内2位。1994年ポートターミナルビルが完成,ウォーターフロントの整備が進む。洲本城跡の三熊公園,山頂に千光寺のある先山,由良地区の海岸,西岸の景勝地五色浜は瀬戸内海国立公園に属する。2006年2月津名郡五色町を編入。182.38km2。4万7254人(2010)。
