A Buddhist ruin located in a valley in the Hindu Kush Mountains west of Kabul, Afghanistan. It is at a key point on the transportation routes between India, Central Asia, and Western Asia. Numerous rock caves have been excavated around two gigantic stone Buddha statues, 38m and 55m high, carved into the cliffs. The stone Buddha statues are in the Gandharan style with a touch of Persian influence, and the decorative murals in the niches are also famous for their Gandharan and Persian styles, but in the summer of 2001 they were blown up by the Taliban, a political group that advocates Islamic fundamentalism. In 2003 it was registered as a World Heritage Site. →Cave temples Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
