One of the haloalkenes (alkenes with halogen atoms). Its correct name is 2-chloro-1,3-butadiene. It is a volatile colorless liquid. There is an industrial method for synthesizing it from butadiene. In the butadiene process, butadiene is chlorinated at 300°C, then isomerized with a copper salt catalyst to obtain 3,4-dichloro-1-butene, which is then dehydrochlorinated with an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide to produce it. It polymerizes easily with light, heat, and oxygen. The polymer obtained by emulsion polymerization is heat-resistant, chemical-resistant, aging-resistant, and flame-retardant, and is widely used as a synthetic rubber known as neoprene, and is also used as a rubber-based adhesive.
