Teika Style

Japanese:
Teika Style

The calligraphy style of Fujiwara Teika, a famous poet and scholar of poetry in the early Kamakura period. Teika's calligraphy is characterized by lines that do not focus much on character shape and show extreme variations in pen pressure. Although it is a quirky style, it has its own unique style, and the descendants of Teika, such as Nijo, Reizei, and Kyogoku, have had a significant influence on the calligraphy style of the poets who inherited the study of poetry. In the early modern period, it was publicized under the name of Teika-ryu or Teika-sama. Teika's theory of poetry was revered in the tea ceremony, and he produced many followers among poets and tea masters. Starting with the regent Konoe Nobutada, poets such as Karasuma Mitsuhiro and Reizei Tamemura, renga masters such as Satomura Genchin, and tea masters such as Kobori Enshu and Matsudaira Fumai were all masters of the Teika school.
