A volcanic archipelago in the South Atlantic, north of the Weddell Sea, a British territory. Located at approximately 57°45′ south latitude and 26°30′ west longitude, it consists of 11 small islands, including the main island of Montague Island, with a total area of 312 km2. It is connected by the Scotia Ridge, which stretches from the Andes to the Antarctic Peninsula, and is uninhabited, with much of the area being barren and mountainous, including the highest peak, Mount Belinda (1,372 m). It was discovered by J. Cook in 1775, and is an attached territory of the Falkland Islands, but Argentina also claims it. The South Sandwich Trench runs along the east side.
