It is the capital of Qal'at District, Baluchistan Province, southwest of Pakistan. It is located about 130 km south-southwest of Quetta. From the 15th century until the British occupation in 1839, it was a town of the Mirwari people who migrated from Oman. It is a trading center for wheat, wool, and rock salt.
